Les de Asis wanted a knife that reflected the latest in materials and manufacturing technology to replace the cheap butterfly knives, known as Bali-Songs, that he had played with as a kid. Using his high school shop skills, he blueprinted his dream knife before eventually meeting Victor Anselmo, who helped him grind the first ever pre-Benchmade Bali-Song prototype. Paired with handles that Les sourced from a small machine shop in California, he assembled and finished his first Bali-Song in his own garage. The original equipment was purchased form the owner of a manufacturing operation who was looking to retire. Utilizing the rudimentary technology available to him at the time, Les began building handmade custom Bali-Songs, along with Jody Sampson, who ground all the blades. Over the next seven years, the company expanded its product offerings into fixed blades and conventional folding knives, evolving its name from Bali-son, Inc. In , due to its inability to control quality, price, and delivery, Pacific Cutlery Corp. In , Les reintroduced a new company and new version of the Model 68; This time with a drive to produce product in the US and an even stronger commitment to product availability, quality, and customer relationships. The company now needed a new name.

This hertiage began when prehistoric man was inspired to make cutting edges. Why New York’s Hudson Valley? America attracted ore miners to Pennsylvania, that built a Canal from their inland mines to the Hudson River to distribute their products. They settled, and built, a new American tradition of fine knife-making. Here they developed an international reputation surpassing that of their original home towns.
Among the dozens of knife companies founded here were Walden Knives and Schrade Cutlery, which ultimately merged together as Schrade Walden. Imperial Schrade, based its operations in Ellenville in, developed an international reputation as the maker of Old Timer and Uncle Henry Knives. When the primary owners of Imperial Schrade, Henry and Albert Baer passed away, their estates and the new majority stock holders drove Imperial Schrade into receivership and then finally bankruptcy in Its trademarks were auctioned off, and new owners of the trademark, Taylor Brands, LLC, moved its operations to China.

Multi-tool Multi-tool knives formerly consisted of variations on the American camper style or the Swiss Army knives manufactured by Victorinox and Wenger , however, the concept of a multitool knife has undergone a revolution thanks in part to an avalanche of new styles, sizes, and tool presentation concepts. These new varieties often incorporate a pair of pliers and other tools in conjunction with one or more knife blade styles, either locking or nonlocking.
Multitool knives often have more than one blade, including an assortment of knife blade edges serrated, plain, saws as well as a myriad of other tools such as bottle openers , corkscrews , and scissors. A large tool selection is the signature of the Swiss Army Knife. These knives are produced by Victorinox and Wenger and issued to military services and sold to the public.
“The Schrade Manilla Butterfly has been a game-changer for us and we couldn’t be more proud of the fact that it’s a USA made knife,” Schrade‘s Andrew Bledsoe tells us. Unlike cheaper balisongs, the Manilla has solid steel handles made to hold up to the throws and hard falls of balisong flipping.
Schrade is involved in making a variety of tools and implements beyond just knives. The following are all made under the Schrade brand: It probably goes without saying, but Schrade is not a brand like Buck, or Case that has a rich history and is shrouded in the aura of being family owned and operated business. Nor does it have the appeal of boutique knife manufacturers that cultivate strong connections with their customer base.
That is just not what these knives or this company are all about. No attempt is made to engage the consummate knife enthusiast, and rather than having a warranty, they only offer a returns policy—which, by the way, only permits returns of unused knives that are in undamaged packaging within 14 days of purchase.
They do not even bother naming their knives, but instead only assign generic model numbers that indicate various design elements of the product. What they do well, however, is making very rugged and dependable knives that are available at extremely reasonable price points.

I reprint the Chart here with the caveat that Schrade Tang marks were pretty constant from until the early ‘s when they started to come in various designs and wordings over the next 34 years that made them hard to period date. Another caveat is that Schrade knives made after have tang mark wordings that recently look closer and closer to the old Schrade’s tang markings and a collector should be looking at the font and etch on the knife versus tang mark wording as well as the total knife makeup itself as one’s best guide.
Many old experts have always told me do not read the Tang Mark but read the knife.
